Fic - Mako being Mako, AuDy being Amused/Annoyed/Concerned

Set in candidacy AU because I love to default to my own bullshit and wow i haven't written for it in a long time

for Annie/@dancynrew on twitter

When one of the crew asks if they know where ‘Officer Trig’ is, AuDy lies and says they don’t. No one bothers to look up, and no one bothers to ask them why they’ve been in the same place for nearly twenty minutes without even trying to look busy.

Maybe they write that off as a quirk of ‘Divine Behavior’ and leave them be.

AuDy sits on a crate, arms crossed over their chest, and glances up every so often to ensure that they can still see Mako’s leg from where it dangles over the edge of his hoverboard.

They can’t tell if he’s sulking or sleeping, but he’s been up there for about an hour. They’re just waiting for him to finally come down.

A part of them has prepared an inspiring speech about his behavior. Another part has charted routes through the stars to a spot for a vacation for all of them. Another part has been running a subroutine to track the presence of several key figures aboard the ship.

But mostly, they sit and wait.

Eventually, another sixteen minutes forty seven seconds later, the hoverboard lowers and Mako sits cross legged on it like the image of a genie from an Earth Home movie come to sullenly grant a wish. “I could feel you glaring at me.”

That is a lie. They would glance up at him, but not often or long enough for anyone to notice. AuDy lets it slide. “I was merely concerned.”

Mako hugs his arms to his chest, one finger tapping out a rhythm that AuDy recognizes on instinct.

They reach for his hand, taking it carefully in their own, and gives it a firm but gentle squeeze—the tips of their fingers pressed into his palm, tapping out their own rhythm. Soothing over the old wound, not able (or willing) to replace it, but knowing that there’s a void to be filled.

His shoulders slump as he returns the gesture, a thin smile on his lips. “Thanks for covering for me.”

“Of course. Besides, I didn’t know how to get you down.”

Mako laughs, and it’s a little hollow, but still rings with his usual amusement.
