Fic - Signet/Echo
I asked for a signet/echo prompt because I wanted to write some softness, and Lu requested some post-AU content with more Reverie fam, so here.
Echo is surprised to find Signet fretting, locked in her office, under the guise of ‘work’.
But Bluberri confirms she has nothing on her schedule, cleared after Fugue and Litany accepted the invitation to spend some time on Thyrsus.
“I’m busy,” Signet says automatically as soon as Echo enters her office. “I promise I’ll be done in time to greet your parents when they arrive.”
“Really?” They lift an eyebrow, pulling out a folded up schedule from their back pocket. “Because according to your assistant—” and here, her eyes widen and her cheeks mottled— “you’ve got nothing scheduled for, hm… almost a week?”
Signet actually tries to snatch the paper from their hand, as if it would make a difference, as if she needs to confirm her own fib, but Echo easily dances out of the way. “It’s not what you think,” she says, breathless, embarrassed at having been caught.
“I can tell them that it’s not a good time,” Echo says, relenting and holding out the schedule.
Signet lifts her hand, grasping the edges of the paper between thumb and forefinger, but doesn’t take it. “No… no, they are fine. It’s just that…”
They catch her free hand in their own, releasing their hold on the paper to twirl her hair around her fingers. “What is it?”
“I think that I’m nervous.”
Echo blinks, not expecting this response. “Nervous? Of what, meeting my parents? You’ve already done that.”
“And I was nervous then, too.”
They don’t laugh, though they exhale a short breath as they step in closer to her. “They like you.”
There’s a twitch to her expression, the hint of a frown. “You don’t know that.”
Strictly speaking, no, they can’t be confident in that answer. Their parents’ reactions to Signet are as much to do with her being the Excerpt as they do to her being their child’s partner. “Okay, but I like you, and that’s the important thing.”
Signet manages a shaky smile as she ducks her head. After months, she still gets bashful from their casual confessions. “It’s been so long since I’ve been a part of a family, of something so small and insular.”
Echo takes a step closer, their body already familiar with her curves and her warmth. “You’ve won over Legato already,” they assure her, pressing a kiss to the curve of her jaw. “Despite everything, Ballad respects you now—” they kiss the other side of her jaw, enjoying the feel of her laughter against them. “Comparatively, my parents are easy at this point.”
She accepts the kiss they press to her lips, returning it eagerly as their arms slip around her shoulders. “Thank you, Echo.”
“Of course.” They tease their nails against her skull, enjoying her shiver and soft sigh. “Now, they’ll be here in a few hours. Can I distract you until then?”
“I’d be disappointed if you didn’t,” she answers, and they give a delighted grin as they tug her after them into one of the side rooms.
The door swings open, and Legato enters first, her voice bright and excited as she hangs off of Lumen’s arm. Ballad walks on her other side, and for a brief moment, Echo aches to see them like that — Ballad dressed once again in Tidal cloth, Legato dominating Lumen’s attention. They’re Echo’s favorite people, as if they’ve stepped out of a simple memory.
And then they register Lumen’s uniform, the darkness at the corners of Ballad’s eyes, and Signet’s hand slips into theirs, and the illusion… doesn’t shatter, but it morphs. Sharpens at the edges, but settles comfortably into place.
Fugue and Litany enter a bit behind, eyes wide as they take in the sights of Thyrsus and Signet’s less-glamorous reception room. They catch Echo’s gaze, and their smiles are nervous, but awed.
Legato separates herself from Lumen, and closes the distance between her and Echo with tremendous speed.
“Don’t run—” Litany tries, but his warning is ignored as Legato launches herself across the remaining space to capture Echo in a fierce hug.
She buries her face in their shoulder, and, shocked, all Echo can do is pat her back awkwardly.
Over her head, they watch Ballad and Lumen close the gap she left, their hands finding each other’s with ease.
“Ballad told us what happened,” Legato says, pulling their attention back to her. “About what you did.”
Echo swallows down the sudden surge of emotion and looks to Signet for help.
She gives the hand still in her grasp a gentle squeeze before pulling away—going to welcome Fugue and Litany properly.
“I didn’t do anything,” they start, but she shakes her head and holds them tighter.
“I’m proud of you, Echo,” she says, and they hadn’t realized how much they needed to hear those words from their family until that moment.
They pull her into their embrace, and then lift her a few inches off the ground to spin her in a circle—her laughter ringing through the room. “Ballad, get your dumb ass over here,” Echo says, looking at their brother.
He sighs, though it is clearly all for show. Lumen gives him a fond smile as he pulls away and makes his way up to his siblings.
Legato grabs him as soon as he’s close enough, and drags him into the hug.
Ballad folds them both easily into his embrace, and Echo closes their eyes in the comfort of their presence.
