Hey it's Dora's birthday so, you know, what better way to do than more of their favs being good?????

This actually wasn't from the smooch central list, but it was one Annie gave me sometime last year, so it, you know, still counts.

The peals of Mako and Aria’s laughter float back through the halls of the estate, and Cass follows the sound of them until they reach the double doors thrown open to the weather.

They find AuDy already there, standing just within the frame. Arms crossed over their chassis, links blinking in silent contemplation.

AuDy shifts up straighter when Cass approaches, and drops a hand so that Cass can slip their palm into AuDy’s grip. “They are going to catch a cold,” AuDy remarks, and nods their torso in the direction of the garden beyond.

Mako and Aria are thoroughly soaked, and skit around on bare feet in the warm summer rain. Their shouts and giggles fill the courtyard as much as their slipping and sliding, and Cass breathes out a sigh that turns into a huff of laughter.

“They’ll be fine,” Cass muses. They pause a beat, then give an experimental tug to AuDy’s hand.

Sure enough, they don’t budge. They barely even seem to notice the shift.

Cass lifts an eyebrow, then turns to look back at the other two. Something deep in their chest stirs, called up by the memory of laughter in similar storms. Cass and their siblings, ignoring the tired sighs of their nurses and tutors. “You won’t catch a cold though, so why are you hiding?”

AuDy reacts slowly, turning to face Cass. “I am a robot,” they say, as if stating a simple fact.

Cass snorts. “You’re a Divine.”

The lights blink blink blink in rapid succession, but there’s no immediate response. “I do not wish to damage this body.”

“Shut up, that cannot be why you’re hiding here.”

“It is very wet.”

“Yes.”

“This is the third day of rain, and yet Mako and Aria keep going out to play in it every day.”

Cass shrugs. “Might as well. They’re getting cooped up in the estate, and I don’t blame them.”

The memory in their chest spreads across their limbs, and it’s only the steady and comfortable weight of AuDy’s hand in theirs that keeps them still.

“Why does it rain so much here?”

“Well, we’re fish people. Wouldn’t want us to dry out.”

The lights blink blink blink blink—-freeze, then dim in the way that is synonymous with someone narrowing their eyes. “You are being sarcastic again.”

Cass grins, and they can feel the facade of Scion and Candidate slip until they’re just a child again. “I’m not wrong.”

AuDy can’t huff, but their silence is telling.

So Cass pulls on their hand again. “A few minutes in the rain won’t hurt you. You’re made of sturdier stuff than that.”

“You wish to join them.” It’s not a question. AuDy’s caught on, the way they always do, to the whims of Cass’ moods.

So they don’t bother answering. They press the tips of their fingers to AuDy’s palm, enjoying the application of pressure in response, and press their lips to the side of AuDy’s chassis where the semblance of a head is. “C’mon. Just for a few minutes.”

AuDy’s sigh is a vocalization that they’ve picked up from Aria and Mako—overly dramatic, long, and loud. But this time, when Cass pulls on their hand, they follow.

The drops are large and warm and remind Cass of easier times, but they don’t mind so much when Mako barrels across the courtyard to catch onto them, or when Aria tugs AuDy away from their grip.

It’s comforting and familiar in a way they haven’t felt in this house in a very long time.
