The best cure for being sad of Cassander Timaeus Berenice: Write them doing something silly and good

For KP/@bipolyjack on twitter!

“Sword up, Aria,” they find themself saying for the tenth time.

She wines and kicks her foot in a way that some might find endearing, but they’ve been standing across from her for fourty-five minutes and they know her wims better than that by now. “I’m tired.”

“You’ve done more for concerts.”

“But this is boring.”

Cass clicks their tongue in disapproval, and, across the hangar, where he works on programming for one of the ship’s droids, Mako fails to stifle a laugh. (“You sound like a mother hen,” he says whenever he catches Cass doing that. And then he’ll cluck in the approximation of what Cass can only guess is a chicken.) “Then what can I do to make it more exciting?” they ask, probably more out of desperation to finish off the last fifteen minutes of this lesson than anything else.

Aria’s eyes light up at the suggestion and they know that there’s a strong chance they’ll regret what she says next. “Fight me.”

They narrow their eyes as Mako laughs harder. “What?”

“C’mon. Fight me.” She lifts her sword, and they have to give her credit because they did say sword up, but she also lifts her other hand into a fist and looks like she’s about ready to either punch them or stab her eye out.

“This seems like a bad idea,” AuDy warns, though they make no further move to intervene.

Aria tosses her hair over her shoulder and strikes a pose like one of the anime characters she likes to watch. “I’ll show you, no one messes with the Precious Bell!”

Cass groans as they rub their hand over their forehead. “Alright. Okay. Whatever. If this will keep you entertained for fifteen more minutes.”

“You need to get into character.”

“No.”

“Come on. Just a half-cape thrown rakishly over one shoulder—”

“Aria, I am not dressing up just so you can finish your lesson!”

Her sigh echoes loudly throughout the hangar, but Cass knows better, and they stand their ground, and say, “Now, sword up, Aria.”

She does, form perfect, and when she smirks at them, they wonder if these lessons are really for her benefit, or a test to their own patience.
