Blue J watches the light show with wonderment on their face. This isn’t the first time that Benjamin has done this trick, but it never ceases to amaze them each time.
They applaud when it’s done, and, blushing, Benjamin grins and lets his hands fall back into his lap. “You’re getting better!
“You’re just saying that...”
“No, really! The colors were more vibrant this time, and the lights were--they were—!!” Blue J is at a loss for words, their hands flitting about in the space between them, tracing the paths the lights had just taken. Eventually, they let out a breath, and their hands drop back into their own lap as well. “I’m just very proud of you.”
Benjamin’s blush deepens on his dark skin, and he looks away, rubbing his hand over the back of his head. “Thank you.”
“I wish I could do something cool like that...” Blue J says longingly, and Benjamin sighs fondly.
“You can do plenty of cool things.”
“Not magic, though.”
Benjamin grins, looking at them with eyes just as bright as the lights had been, and Blue J can feel their breath catch in their throat. “I’ve seen the way you’ve interacted with the plants! You know your way through that forest like no one else. It’s a different kind of magic.”
He straightens in the way he does when he’s about to impart some words of wisdom he’s learned, and Blue J leans in, attentive. “Magic isn’t just all about what one can do with arcane abilities. Talent is just as important as important as skill, and learned is learned.”
Blue J wrinkles their nose. “That doesn’t make any sense.”
Benjamin deflates a bit, and Blue J has a hard time holding back the laughter at his defeated expression. But it doesn’t keep him down for long and he’s back up again, reaching across the space between them to grasp Blue J’s hands in his own. “What I mean is that your skills are just as amazing and--and magical as mine are! I couldn’t even dream of doing what you do!”
“Ben,” Blue J says, finally letting the laugh slip. “You can do literal magic, and you’re impressed by walking through a forest.”
“Yes,” Benjamin says with all the utmost seriousness he can muster, and this time, Blue J is the one to blush.
“Oh,” they say, uncertain. “Oh.”
Benjamin lifts a hand, but it hesitates in the air just shy of lighting on Blue J’s cheek. There’s a beat, and they watch Benjamin swallow down something (nerves? Because Blue J is suddenly very nervous at how close they are, and how soft Benjamin looks in the light filtering in through the slats of wood, and when his hand lands on their cheek, they marvel at how warm it is).
They only mean to lean into the touch--no, they don’t even mean to do that. It’s supposed to be casual, it’s supposed to be simple.
But leaning into his touch is simple, and then they lean into him, until the space between them is nothing more than the merest hair’s breadth, until Benjamin sucks in a lungful of air in a gasp, and lets it out on a soft oh and Blue J isn’t sure who officially closes the distance but it is so simple.
And maybe it’s the butterflies that have been running rampant in their stomach since... since... well, Blue J has lost track how long they’ve been there--because it feels like they’ve always been there, each time they look at Benjamin. But either way, they blame that on the sudden giggle that bubbles up from their chest and spills out across their lips.
Benjamin’s voice hitches on a giggle as well, and Blue J kisses him again, as his hand shifts back across their cheek, sweeping over their jaw to wrap his fingers at the base of Blue J’s head.
Their laughter is caught between kisses, and the relief sinks into their shoulders, comfortable, and simple.
