Thank u Lu, as always, for letting me write such good softness
Echo rolls the small bundle of tea around in the bottom of the glass pot, holding it up at eye level as they keep an ear out for the water to boil. It doesn’t look like much, though Tender swore up and down that it’s actually one of Signet’s favorite teas.
To be perfectly honest, it looks more like something that should be planted in a garden than brewed for tea, but they trust Tender enough to know that she wouldn’t pull that sort of prank on them.
The small tea service tray has a plate with a few cookies, two delicate glasses for the tea, and--perhaps a bit foolishly--a small vase with flowers that Echo picked on a whim while on their walk around the Thyrsian perimeter that morning.
They frown as they place the glass pot down, fussing instead with the flowers. They remove them, put them back, rearrange them in the vase, try to decide if they’re embarrassing. And then the water is near boiling, and they hurry to turn the heat off and transfer the water to a simple kettle, not spilling a single drop.
With a breath, Echo scoops up the tray and makes their way back to Signet’s office.
She looks up when they enter, lifting a delicate eyebrow as she notices the tray in their hand. “Oh? I was wondering where you had gone off to.”
Echo lifts it up higher, as if that will prevent her from seeing what’s on it. “I told you I was going to make you some tea.”
“I didn’t think you were serious.”
They pout, but quickly school their expression over into a haughty disinterest as they move into the side room. “It’s time for you to take a break.” Echo sets the tray down on a low table in the room and begins to unceremoniously pile every cushion onto the floor.
“I’m almost done with this request—”
“Signet.” They at her side in an instant.
She eagerly tilts her face up towards them, clearly expecting a kiss, but all they do is smooth their thumbs across her cheekbones and, holding her head in place, say, “It’s time for a break.”
Her sigh follows them as they draw away. “Five more minutes.”
“Now, or I’m going to enjoy this fancy Anticipation tea all by myself.”
This gets Signet to pay attention. “Which tea?” She’s not the one with ears and a tail, but Echo can imagine if she did have traits like Tender, the ears would be alert and the tail twitching back and forth in an anticipation of her own.
“I don’t remember the name of it,” they lie. “Tender gave me a box of it, said I might like it.”
She gave them a box when she returned from her vacation a few days before, and it had been a tremendous effort to keep it a secret from Signet--considering they spent most of their time with her, and rarely sleep in their own room. They’ve read the instructions on the packet several times, but even then, they still think the bulb of tea looks more like a garden pellet and they can’t tell what’s so delicious about it.
Signet finally abandons her desk and moves into the side room with them. She lowers herself gracefully onto the cushions at their side, and a fond smile replaces the curiosity as she notices the flowers.
Echo ignores the blush in their cheeks as she caresses the petals, focusing instead on pouring the hot water into the glass teapot.
To their surprise, after a moment bouncing around the interior, the green leaves begin to peel away from the bulb, revealing a beautiful, soft pink flower.
“Oh—! It’s beautiful…” They turn and glance at Signet as her fingers card back through their hair. “I’ve never had tea like this before.”
“It’s one of my favorites, but I haven’t had the chance to get any for ages. I had forgotten to ask Tender, but it seems she remembered anyway…” Signet leans over and rests her head against Echo’s shoulder.
They’re careful not to jostle her as they pour the tea into the cups. It’s still too hot to drink, so they relax back and let their fingers twine around Signet’s.
She props her chin on their shoulder, leaving a quick peck on their cheek before they tilt their head to look at her. “Thank you for the tea,” she says, her smile fond.
Echo lets themself take a moment to study her, enjoying the way the golden light plays across her robes and sending an array of tiny rainbows against the far wall. “Thank you for making sure I don’t have to drink all of this on my own.”
Signet laughs, and leans in to kiss them properly.
