Thank you emma i need more of these girls and their little family in my life, as do we all
"Adaire…?" Hella says one day.
"Hm?" Adaire doesn't look up from the map she's studying. It's one of Rix's latest projects, and the girl had to be sent from the room before she vibrated into another strata from anticipation.
"Do you ever feel like…" She pauses, uncertain of how to phrase this. "We have two dogs?"
This gets Adaire to look up, features twitching into a frown. "What?"
"The little one. Rowe."
"Well, that's rude."
"Not what I meant." Hella gets up from where she sits and crosses the room so that she can sit closer to Adaire. Just a hand on the thigh, simple and casual. It's still new, the tips of her fingers tracing the folds of Adaire's skirts, learning the rough fabric before Adaire smacks Hella's wandering hand and places it firmly on her knee. "He has the biggest puppy dog eyes."
"Does he?" Adaire asks, bemused.
"I've tripped over him twice."
"Perhaps he was trying to pick your pocket." She says it with such an air of indifference that Hella isn't sure if she should laugh or be concerned. "I told him not to, but you know how kids are."
Hella considers this, then shakes her head. "I don't."
Adaire looks at her again, and the twitch at the corner of her lips could either be a frown or a smirk. "Like you were never a kid once."
"Not like this." She doesn't clarify what 'this' means, but Adaire seems to understand anyway.
"Perhaps, have you considered that he looks up to you?"
This Hella also considers, and shakes her head again.
Finally, Adaire sighs and sets aside the map. She takes Hella's hand from her knee, holding it in both of her own hands, and places a quick kiss on Hella's cheek. "Maybe you can take him to play fetch next time," she teases before taking up the map and rising from the couch.
"Now who's being mean," Hella says, enjoying the sound of Adaire's laugh as she walks away.
