Adaire opens her eyes slowly, afraid of what she's going to see. "I've died," she says flatly. Then, when she turns and sees Hella standing next to her, she adds, "We've both died."
There's a smile, wan as it is, that crosses Hella's face and for some reason, it's a comfort to see. "We're okay." She reaches out, and her hands cup Adaire's face, hold her steady as everything seems to whirl around her. "When we wake back up, we'll be at home in our bed." She punctuates it with a kiss, and the tension drains from Adaire's shoulders.
"Then why are we here?" she asks, wanting to be mad, because they've just been through so much, that all she wants to do is really and truly sleep, but Hella kisses her again, slower -- now that they have the time, they have the space.
Mostly.
"I didn't think it would work," Adelaide says, breathless, as she joins them on the shore. She reaches out, and Hella moves to her automatically, pulling her into a fierce embrace. "I was so worried, the entire time."
"Hella has that affect on people," Adaire snorts, glancing away as Adelaide gives Hella a tender kiss. "Always making people worried."
Adaire jumps in surprise as Adelaide's cool, slender hands wrap her in an embrace as well.
"Don't think I feel so little for you." Adelaide's voice is light, but this close, lips be Adaire's ear, she can hear the worry, the relief. "I brought you here because I wanted to see you." The kiss that Adelaide leaves on her cheek is soft, lingering, and Adaire allows herself to lean into it.
"Thank you," Adaire finally says, into the space between them, "For keeping her safe."
"Both of you," Adelaide amends without hesitation. She takes Hella's hands in one of hers, keeping the other on Adaire's elbow. "You kept each other safe."
Hella stoops down to press a kiss to Adelaide's cheek as her other arm wraps reassuringly around Adaire's waist.
Slowly, bit by bit, the three of them fold together, clustered on the shore, as Adelaide presses kisses to both of them -- foreheads, cheeks, lips, collar bones, hands, whatever she can reach -- as Hella mutters reassurances and comforts, as Adaire finally releases the last of the tension and closes her eyes, head against Hella's shoulder, hand gripping Adelaide's, feeling at peace.
